Adopting an Olive Tree from Nudo

Background

In 2005 the owners of Nudo started a new life as olive farmers in Italy. For their business they work with small scale artisanal farmers. Each olive farmer retains responsibility for the care of his grove and the oil produces goes into the olive oil adopt a tree programme. This helps to provide financial security for the farmers and make viable the traditional farming methods which make such delicious olive oil.

Types of Tree

Part of the fun of adopting a tree from Nudo is getting to select which tree to adopt. The website details each of their different groves. The groves are planted with a range of different varieties which produce different tasting oils. The website gives information about the olive groves, the types of tree and some information on the farmer who works the land - for instance we learn that 'Ardelio has hands as gnarled as his trees' (nudo-italia.com) other farmers have worked as dentists or else been the local mayor!

Oil

The oil is organically produced extra virgin oil. Tasting notes for each grove give you an idea of what to expect: Piantone di Mogliano for example is buttery and mild, whilst other oil is described as intense and fruity.

What Do You Get

As well the extra virgin olive oil from 'your' tree you will be sent 3 flavoured extra virgin oils, a personalised adoption certificate and a booklet about your tree. Your oil will arrive in the spring (a minimum of 1.5 litres guaranteed), with the flavoured oils sent out in the autumn.

Price

£65/$105 plus shipping.

Notes

  • You can visit your tree and give it a little love - and maybe some water.
  • You feel like you are in the grove selecting your tree as you get loads of information about the olives, their taste, the farmer, the land, a map and a little dot for each tree.
  • By adopting a tree you are helping to support artisanal farmers to work the land using traditional techniques.

The mist is rising from the valley as we walk down to the olive grove.  In the distance the sound of the church bells rings out.  We spread the nets around the tree - keeping them close to the trunk to make sure the olives don't fall through and get lost onto the ground below!
